A Twist on Grant Wood’s Famous Painting
After teaching students about Grant Wood and the meaning of his famous painting, American Gothic, I set them to work creating their own masterpieces.
Each student receives a coloring page of American Gothic along with instructions to make their own version, either by redrawing the entire piece or by adding snippets they cut out from magazines. The finished products are framed with black matte board and put on display in the hallway.
I find that having students interact with a style or signature piece of artwork really helps them remember the important details of an artist’s life and mission.
