Gift Books for Grandparents' DaySunday is National Grandparents’ Day and this is one holiday I really like to recognize with my students. To celebrate, I’ve asked them to invite their grandparents or grandparents of others that they know to join us in class tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon.

We will start our time together with worship and some light refreshments. Then, each guest will receive a wrapped copy of The Joyous Gift of Grandparents. (This book usually costs $15.95, but is available for $3.89 at Library and Educational Services.) In each book I inscribe a greeting and blessing from our class.

After the snacks, I will teach a simple art lesson from Using Color in Your Art,letting the students and their grandparents complete a project together. It is always fun to watch them interact. It teaches the students a good lesson about honoring and serving their elders, and of course, the grandparents’ faces are pretty neat to watch too, because they feel so valued and connected.

Last year I took pictures of our time together and submitted them with a short article to the local newspaper. Sure enough, we made the front page! It was great PR for the school, but even more, it was a great way to teach students about giving back to those who have invested so much in them.
