I’m so excited to share with you a clip of the music performance our two sixth grade classes put on for assembly yesterday

I got the idea two weeks ago when I saw a link on Facebook of two girls singing while tapping out a rhythm with cups.

I just loved it and thought my students would find it fun too. They did and within a few practices, they had the routine down. The only thing that didn’t impress me in the original video is the lyrics. I wanted something of more value, so I asked the other sixth grade teacher, Joyce, if she would rewrite the words. That’s the beauty of team-teaching; you benefit from each others’ strengths. Joyce is gifted in music and within a few days she came up with these new lyrics for the song.

I got my ticket for the long way ’round
So glad salvation is free
And I sure would like some sweet company
Wouldn’t you like to go with me?

We’ll be gone
We’ll be gone
We’re going to heaven; we’ll be gone
We’ll be living with the Son
We’ll be praising all night long
We’re going to heaven; we’ll be gone

I got my ticket for the long way ’round
So glad salvation is free
And I sure would like some sweet company
Wouldn’t you like to go with me?

We’ll be gone
We’ll be gone
We’re going to heaven; we’ll be gone
We’ll be living with the Son
We’ll be praising all night long
We’re going to heaven; we’ll be gone

I got my ticket for the long way ’round
So glad salvation is free

And I sure would like some sweet company
Wouldn’t you like to go with me?

We’ll be gone

With these new lyrics, the song was perfect. So, the moral of the story is don’t be afraid to try new things, especially ones that students are excited about. You can often find out what those are by paying attention to their Facebook posts and listening to them.
